Slippery Rock Township Honor Roll - Princeton PA
The original Slippery Rock Township Honor Roll, honoring the military veterans of the township, was dedicated on the afternoon of Sunday, February 6, 1944. It was a small wooden memorial located along Mt. Hermon Church Road just outside Princeton in Lawrence County, Pennsylvania. It was erected directly in front of the Slippery Rock Township High School – also known less formally as the Princeton School. A ceremony was held in the school auditorium and the principal speaker was the Reverend Clyde L. Myers. Myers, a Westminster College graduate and pastor serving the First Presbyterian Church in Sharon, had strong family ties to the Princeton area.
The wooden memorial wall apparently became weathered over time and in the summer of 1991 a committee was organized to repair or replace it. The New Castle News of Friday, July 19, 1991, mentioned, “The Slippery Rock Township honor roll needs updated. Anyone knowing names of service people to be added or willing to make donations to help repair the honor roll should contact one of the following: Ray and Mary Young, Alan Carlson, Tom Myers, Gaylord Myers, LuAnn Reagle and Nancy Bintrim.” It was soon decided to raise $10,000 to replace the memorial and a fundraising campaign commenced.
The new Slippery Rock Township Honor Roll, made up of four black granite walls, was carved by the Joseph N. Chill Memorials company of New Castle. The work of erecting the memorial was done by several local men. The front stone contains the inscription, “Dedicated To Our Men and Woman Who Have Served Their Country In All Branches Of Military Service.” The other walls contain the names of local military veterans who have served in wars or conflicts since World War I. It was dedicated during a ceremony held on the afternoon of Sunday, June 28, 1992. Rebecca Myers, a 1981 graduate of Laurel High School and a New York attorney, was the featured speaker. The Reverend Ellwood Schall, the pastor of the Center Presbyterian Church, also took part in the ceremony.

My maternal grandmother’s name was also Ella Harlan. She married Raymond Myers. My mother’s name is Nancy Myers Coccia. Ella also had other children (my uncle and aunts): Norris, Phyllis, and Shirley.
