Wayne Township Consolidated School - Wayne Twnp PA

Text Coming Soon!

The five-room Wayne Township Consolidated School, built as part of the federal government’s Public Works Administration (PWA) initiative, opened for classes for students in grades 1-8 in early September 1937. When it was opened the old one-room schools of Quarry, Mt. Hope, and Locust Ridge were closed for good. Due to overcrowding one additional room was added in 1941 and again in 1950. A major addition of four classrooms was completed in 1955. At that time the crowded school contained 355 total students. (1967) Full Size

The Wayne Township Consolidated School became part of the Ellwood City Area School District beginning in July 1959. It served the Ellwood City district until dwindling attendance saw it closed in 1984. The property was sold less than a decade later. (c2012) Full Size

This view shows the back of the old school. It currently sits vacant atop its hillside perch along Old Pittsburgh Road – just north of the Slippery Rock Presbyterian Church and Cemetery. (c2012) Full Size

A class photo – possibly sixth or seventh graders – from the Wayne Township Consolidated School during 1952. I have a listing of all the names and will post them later. The teacher is identified as Mrs. Kelso. (1952) Full Size

  1. Where was the school actually located?

  2. (EDITOR’S NOTE) This large school building, now vacant, is located off of Hollow Road just north of the Slippery Rock Presbyterian Church and Cemetery. Jeff

  3. I went to this elimentary school i think from 1957 to 1962.

  4. I can remember playing jacks on the sidewalks outside this school and also pusing friends on the swings. One winter the olders kids made snow dinosaurs in the yard. I went there from 1st grade to sixth or seventh grade.

  5. My mom and her 2 brothers went there. Dollie, Bob and Bill McQuiston.

  6. Went to school here all 6 grades in the 70’s. Played ball on little league team the Wayne Cardinals :-) fond memories.

  7. Attended here 1976-1982 (1st-6th grade). I remember playing baseball on the field next to the school and going to the spring over the hillside to drink. My teachers 1-6 were respectively Mrs. Miller, Miss Graff, Mrs. D’Amico, Mrs. Deal, Mr. D’Amore, and Mr. Hassen. I loved that school and have a lot of good memories there.

  8. I attended Wayne School and it sits on Old Pittsburgh Road, not Hollow Road.
It is such a shame to see the building in bad condition. It was a beautiful school and the outdoor area was so beautiful too.
I would like to know more about Mt. Hope School and church. I know there was a church and school up in the area of Mt Hope Cemetery. I know a lady and gentleman who attended the Mt. Hope School but, they don’t have photos. I wonder if anyone has photos?
    Great website.
    Thanks!!!

  9. I went to Wayne Twp school grades 1-8. 1946-1954. They split our class in third grade, half were In with 2nd graders and the other half in 4th, because there wasn’t enough class rooms & our class was the smallest. In 5th grade we were put in the small library room, since construction of another room was going on. During my time there, the Matheny school closed and the students were bused to Wayne. One thing I remember is at the end of the school year, which was always during the week before Memorial Day, they put on a picnic. One year it was snowing so bad, that it was held indoors. Can’t remember the year.

  10. I am too young too have attended here, but remember it well right after it closed in the 1980s. it seemed like a school in the woods. It is off Old Pittsburgh road. Hollow road is further up Old Pittsburgh from 65. From Google Earth today it seems it is falling down. A shame to let it go this way. Just tear it down would be better.

  11. All, I will fix the caption to reflect the abandoned school sits off of Old Pittsburgh Road. Thanks for the catch. Jeff (EDITOR)
