Koppel United Methodist Church - Koppel PA

The congregation that formed the Koppel Methodist Episcopal Church was organized by Methodist parishioners along the New Galilee Road in 1909. Two years later they moved into the thriving little town of Koppel and met at several locations to include the new Koppel School (opened 1913). A lot for a church on 2nd Avenue was soon donated by the Koppel Land Company. The first services were held in the basement of the church by early 1914 while the church sanctuary was being completed. The church was completed sometime later that same year. A parsonage was added on an adjoining lot in 1924. Some of the earliest pastors included the Reverends Lowen Douds (1908-1910), Samuel Cousins (1910-1911), William Hunter (1911-1913), and Rufus Hofelt (1913-1914). Over the years the small congregation was affiliated with the Methodist churches in Clinton, Homewood, Chippewa, and Wampum. The congregation became known as the Koppel United Methodist Church in the late 1960’s – and was usually referred to as the First United Methodist Church of Koppel. The church was enlarged with a school and auditorium in 1966. Years later, in 2016, it began sharing a pastor with the Wurtemberg United Methodist Church. On June 30, 2021, while the Reverend Jay F. Sterling of Oil City was serving as pastor, the church was permanently closed due in part to a dwindling congregation. Full Size
