North Side School - Ellwood City PA

Text Coming Soon!

After the borough of Hazel Dell officially became part of Ellwood City in September 1914 it was soon decided to build a new school on the North Side or new “Fourth Ward.” Several lots along North Street (and Orchard Avenue) were purchased for $2,950 and construction of this 12-room school (shown above) began in mid-1916. The new North Side or Fourth Ward School was opened for classes on Friday, February 9. 1917. The vehicles above are parked along North Street. (c1939) Full Size

In 1990 a debate commenced whether to renovate or replace the old North Street School. By the summer of 1991 it was decided to tear down the old school and replace it with a modern building costing $4.7 million. Construction of the new school, fronting Orchard Avenue and adjoining the old school to the west, began in August 1992. In July 1993, when the new structure was nearing completion, the old school was demolished to provide more room. The new North Side Elementary School opened – albeit a few weeks late – for 160 students in September 1993. Currently known as the North Side Primary School, the building houses students in grades K-2. (Aug 2012) Full Size
