Neshannock Presbyterian Church & Cemetery - Hickory Twnp PA

Text Coming Soon!

The small group of Presbyterians began meeting in 1806 in Hickory Township, then a part of Mercer County. In 1810 they acquired some property and built a log cabin church that became known as the Neshannock Presbyterian Church. Around that church they started their own cemetery and in 1832 a larger wooden frame church was erected. In 1840 a dispute saw a faction of the congregation split off, a part of which later formed the Hermon Presbyterian Church on Frew Mill Road. The wooden church was lost to a fire in April 1867, but work soon commenced on a new brick church (shown above) that was completed in 1868. A basement was added in the 1920’s and other major additions were made in 1951 and 1963. (c1917)

The Neshannock Presbyterian Church had always shared a pastor with other nearby churches, but it 1965 – after acquiring some additional property and building a manse – the novice Reverend Andrew C. Byers was hired as the first fulltime pastor. In October 2006 the congregation, which is still going strong, celebrated its 200th anniversary. (Apr 2012)

Comments

  1. This web site identifies the picture of the church/cemetery as “Neshannock United Presbyterian Church & Cemetery” but the signage at the entrance identifies it as “Neshannock Presbyterian Church & Cemetery”, without the word “United”. What is the correct name?

Would you check your records for a William Young (143-1820) and his wife, Mary Elder Young (1757-1836) and verify if they are buried there.

    Sincerely,
    Larry Young
