Scott Township Consolidated School - Harlansburg PA

As early as 1914 the idea to centralize the various small schoolhouses in Scott Township with a new consolidated building was being considered. It some years later but in the fall of 1929 construction got underway on a two-story school, designed by architect W.G. Eckles, with eight classrooms and a gymnasium. Progress was slow and the school did not open for classes until sometime in late 1930. The building housed all primary grades and was also home to the Scott Township High School. In early 1955, when the township joined the new Laurel Area School District, the school was soon redesignated as the Harlansburg Elementary School. It remained in operation until December 1978, when the new Laurel Elementary School was opened. (c1940) Full Size

A class photo from the 1940 senior class of the Scott Township High School. The fifteen seniors, led by valedictorian Thelma Woods, were graduated during a commencement exercise held at the school on Thursday, May 23, 1940. Mr. John Turner, the high school principal, is pictured at top of photo. The older students from Scott Township probably attended the “temporary” Laurel High School in Eastbrook beginning in 1955, until the new Laurel Area Junior-Senior High School opened in early 1959. The old Harlansburg School (as well as similar schools at Eastbrook, Hickory Heights, and Princeton) was closed soon after the new Laurel Elementary School opened for classes on December 13, 1978. In late January 1979 it was sold to David J. Smith Sr. and associates for $20,000. The building was later remodeled as the Harlansburg Apartments and reopened in the fall of 1983. The schools at Eastbrook and Hickory Heights were also converted into similar apartment buildings. (May 2012) Full Size
