(Little) Washington School - Union Twnp PA

The one-room Washington School in Union Township, located on the West Washington Street Extension, was opened in early 1915. The first teacher was Miss Ruth Dufford. It was later referred to as the Little Washington School, likely distinguishing it from the George Washington Junior High School in New Castle. It was eventually closed by early 1955 as the students were moved to the new Union Memorial Elementary School – opened in September 1954 but not fully completed for several months. The Washington School building generally sat vacant and was put up for sale (with the Harbor School) in 1960. It was sold in May 1962 for $1,350 to James E. Leasure of #814 West Washington Street. Since the school opened it was home to the Washington Union Sunday School and a small congregation that later became the Washington Union CMA Church. The congregation opened their own church on the West Washington Street Extension in 1950. (1948) (Photo courtesy of Laurie Salem)
