Mershimer Cemetery is an old family burial ground located in Shenango Township. It was established in 1832 on the property of Sebastian Mershimer (1755-1845), who settled in the area in 1811. Mershimer was awarded 200 acres of land for service in the Revolutionary War. It is said he was with Gen. George Washington when he crossed the Delaware River on Christmas day 1776 to attack the British at Trenton, New Jersey. Many members of the Mershimer family are buried in the cemetery, including Adam Mershimer – Sebastian Mershimer’s son who fought in the War if 1812. It’s likely the last burial took place in 1909.
