Jake Emery's Grocery Store - New Castle PA

Text Coming Soon!

Jacob “Jake” Emery Sr. (1883-1959) and his wife Grace Mitchell Emery (1886-1968) operated a small grocery store on the East Side of New Castle from about 1915-1959. Jake was born in New Castle and was the son of Ezra and Henrietta (McIlheney) Emery. His father Ezra Emery (1841-1924), a New Castle native, was a member of “Keystone Zoauves” during the Civil War. The store was located at #515 S. Ray Street in Croton – on the northeast corner of the intersection of Ray and Oak Streets. They resided nearby at #507 S. Ray Street with their two children. Mrs. Emery taught Sunday school at the 2nd Presbyterian Church and was passionately involved in community affairs. The Emery family – mainly son Jake “Bud” Emery Jr. and his wife Mary (Tanner) Emery – also operated a laundromat, known for a time as Suds & Duds Laundry, in the same building from 1959-1979.
