Superior Bakery Company - New Castle PA

Text Coming Soon!

In 1912 an immigrant named George Giacumakis Sr. (1897-1964), born on the island of Crete in Greece, arrived in New Castle. He took up residence on East Long Avenue and went to work in the local tin mills. In about 1920 he opened his own business on South Mill Street known as Superior Bakery. George Sr. (who I believe is pictured above), married the former Buelah Pappas and together they had three children. Their son George Jr. later became a noted professor of history at Cal State Fullerton. George Sr. was a lifelong member of the St. George Greek Orthodox Church and even taught religious classes at the Neighborhood House on East Long Avenue. He managed his bakery business for many years until he retired in the early 1960’s. He passed away in December 1964 at the age of sixty-seven. The bakery business remained in operation until about 1967. (c1930) Full Size
